PURPOSE AND SCOPE:
This SOP outlines the procedures for ordering, enforcing the use of, and discarding PPE in the mortuary setting to ensure the safety of personnel and prevent the spread of infectious diseases.
Responsibilities:
a. The Mortuary Assistant/supervisors are responsible for ordering PPE supplies, enforcing compliance with PPE protocols, and overseeing the proper disposal of used PPE.
Ordering PPE:
a. Specify the process for identifying PPE needs based on staff roles, tasks performed, and potential hazards.
b. Provide guidelines for ordering PPE supplies, including the selection of appropriate types, sizes, and quantities.
c. Establish protocols for monitoring PPE inventory levels and reordering supplies as needed to maintain adequate stock.
Enforcement of PPE Use:
a. Outline the requirement for all personnel to wear appropriate PPE when performing mortuary duties, regardless of the perceived risk. Ensure each staff member signs for PPE and the use thereof at least once a month
b. Detail consequences for non-compliance with PPE protocols, such as verbal warnings, written reprimands, or disciplinary actions.
c. Emphasize the importance of leading by example and encouraging a culture of PPE compliance among staff members.
Donning (putting on) and Doffing (removing) Procedures:
a. Provide step-by-step instructions for properly putting on and removing each type of PPE, including gloves, gowns, masks, and eye protection. (Annexure “B”)
b. Emphasize the importance of hand hygiene before and after PPE use and the proper disposal of contaminated PPE.
Inspection and Maintenance:
a. Establish protocols for inspecting PPE before each use to ensure it is in good condition and free from defects.
b. Outline procedures for cleaning and maintaining reusable PPE according to manufacturer recommendations.
c. Provide guidelines for replacing PPE that is damaged, soiled, or otherwise compromised.
Discarding Used PPE:
a. Describe procedures for safely removing and disposing of used PPE, including gloves, gowns, masks, and other disposable items.
b. Specify designated containers or disposal bags for collecting used PPE and ensure they are labelled appropriately.
c. Provide instructions for sealing and disposing of contaminated PPE according to local regulations and biohazard waste disposal protocols.
Final Inspection:
a. Conduct a final inspection of the mortuary to ensure that all surfaces, equipment, and areas have been thoroughly cleaned and disinfected.
b. Address any remaining areas that may require additional attention.
c. Document the cleaning process and any issues encountered for future reference or audits.
Storage and Restocking:
a. Store cleaning supplies and PPE in designated areas away from corpse care areas.
b. Restock supplies as needed to ensure readiness for future cleaning tasks.
Training:
a. Require all personnel to undergo initial and periodic training on PPE use, including ordering, enforcement, and disposal procedures.
b. Provide opportunities for hands-on practice and reinforcement of proper PPE techniques.
c. Document training sessions and maintain records of staff participation and competency.
